Downtime

With a week during which the world isn't threatening to end, the heroes are able to put some thought and effort into other things than their immediate threats.

You can choose two mechanically defined downtime actions and also describe what you are doing without mechanical benefit, and these will all be taken into account for a town status update.

Daily lifestyle costs will apply for each day unless you take an action otherwise.

All Exhaustion effects are wiped clean after sufficient long rests which can take place during downtime for no cost.

Mechanical Actions

Building

With sufficient supplies and labourers you can construct buildings over time. A week isn't really long enough to construct a new building, but you can start the foundations of it at a cost of 5,000gp per 25ft sq room you want to construct and construction will commence.

Carousing

You can spend time attending parties, drinking, gambling, and other such coping mechanisms. After the week, we will roll on the Carousing Table to discover how your fortune went. You could end up wasting money or making a lot of money. You could have a whirlwind romance, or become infamous. We'll work out exactly what happened in tandem based on the random result.

Crafting

If you have appropriate crafting tools (e.g. Artisans Tools) you can spend time crafting items at a rate of 5gp worth of market value per day. Items exceeding 5gp in value will be made in increments. Characters can combine their work if they wish.

If you have the ability either from a class or from a recipe, you can attempt to construct a magic item instead at a rate of 25gp worth of market value per day provided you have already got any esoteric components. Common magic items cost 100gp to make, Uncommon 500gp, Rare 5,000gp (minimum level 6), Very Rare 50,000gp (minimum level 11), Legendary 500,000gp (minimum level 17).

Gaining Renown

You perform minor tasks for an organisation and gain (or improve) a positive reputation with them.

Performing Sacred Rites

By devotion, prayer, or other religious ritual to a god throughout your downtime you can gain some divine favour. At the end of this, for the next 2d6 days you gain the ability to give yourself advantage on one roll per day.

Practising Profession

You can spend the days practising a profession your are proficient in to maintain a modest lifestyle at no cost. If you are proficient in Performance you can upgrade to a wealthy lifestyle if you like.

Recuperating

After recuperating for 3 days you can make a DC15 constitution saving throw to either:

  • Eliminate one effect that is preventing you from regaining hit points
  • Gain a 24 hour advantage for saves against disease or poison effects currently affecting you

Any other injuries or effects that are not covered by these are not affected by recuperation and will be subject to their own ending criteria.

Repairs

You can repair or improve an existing building at a cost of 1,000gp per 25ft room you wish to repair or improve, and apply an additional feature (e.g. “strengthened” or “hiding place”) when you do so.

Researching

At an additional cost of 1gp per day you can attempt to find the answers to a question you are researching. If the answer is discoverable in the time frame you will discover it, else you will gain a clue toward the answer.

Running a Business

If you own a business you can spend time and effort maintaining your business. We will roll randomly for the results of this as to how your fortune went. If your business has ongoing costs and you neglect it it may produce problems you need to solve like debts.

Selling Magic Items

You can look for a buyer for esoteric items and attempt to sell them. Provide a Persuasion check when you do so and you will find a buyer accordingly who will make you an offer you can choose to take or leave. You will learn the identity of the buyer whether or not you choose to sell.

Sowing Rumours

You can choose to elevate or slander an individual by spreading rumours throughout town. This costs 1gp a day for the various costs of rumourmongering such as drink purchasing, and you will need to provide either a Persuasion check (for true rumours) or a Deception check (for false ones).

Training

You can attempt to learn a new language or tool. This generally takes a long time, but you can gain a novice understanding of a Tool or Language enough to attempt to use it at a reasonable DC with Disadvantage rather than outright failing.
